Chandipura virus was isolated from the acute phase serum of a child with an acute encephalopathy syndrome, the clinical features of which resembled Reye's syndrome. Chandipura virus has hitherto been known to cause only mild febrile illness and this is the first time that its association with acute fatal illness has been shown.
