Field trial of Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 (VCRC B-17) against Culex and Anopheles larvae

In field tests in India, a spore-crystal complex preparation of serotype H-14 of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis caused 100% mortality of larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus Say, C. sitiens Wied., C. tritaeniorhynchus Giles and Anopheles subpictus Grassi within 24 h of application, regardless of the nature of the breeding habitat (cess pit, coconut husk retting pit or rice-field). However, by the 3rd day after application, 1st-instar larvae reappeared at all the test sites. The bacterial preparation was harmless to various vertebrate and invertebrate members of the aquatic fauna.
