Platelet adhesion on surfaces covered with fibrillar collagen was studied in 8 patients with peptic ulcers without hemorrhage, 6 patients with peptic ulcers aggravated by hemorrhage and in 10 normal subjects. The total level of adhesion in patients with hemorrhage constituted 5620 .+-. 720 platelets/mm2 of the surface and was 1.6 times lower than that in normal subjects (8910 .+-. 580). The platelets in patients without hemorrhage were characterized by intermediate adhesiveness (7660 .+-. 550), that did not significantly differ from platelet adhesiveness in normal subjects. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the correlation between inactivated platelets and different forms of activated platelets adhesion on surfaces covered with fibrillar collagen. This correlation was not different in normal subjects and in patients with peptic ulcers. In peptic ulcers aggravated by hemorrhage, the deficient hemostatic function of platelets may be detected in the stage of primary platelet binding with a collagen matrix.
