Surface electric charge of erythrocytes in rabbits during endotoxin shock

The action of endotoxin on the surface electric change of erythrocyte in Belgian giant rabbits in vivo and in vitro was studied. In the in vivo experiments erythrocyte surface electric charge was estimated using the cell microelectric method in 5 animals injected i.v. with 2 mg.kg-1 Escherichia coli (0111:B4) endotoxin. Animals developing a fulminant shock form a sharp decrease of erythroycte suface electric charge initiating at the very beginning of shock. In usual shock surface electric charge showed a much more progressive decrease after an initial slight increase. The direct endotoxin effect on erythrocyte surface electric charge was studied on erythrocyte specimens from another 10 animals. Erythrocytes (3.2 .times. 108 cells/ml) were incubated in an endotoxin solution (2 .mu.g.ml-1) for 15 min. The endotoxin adsorbed on erythrocyte membranes was found to evoke a fall in erythrocyte surface electric charge by an average of 12%.
