Flavin-dependent oxygen uptake in mitochondria under illumination

Oxygen photouptake (OP) appearing in rat liver mitochondria under illumination with white or blue light was studied. Rotenone and antimycin did not affect photouptake of oxygen, while sodium azide decreased it by half. Glutamate and .beta.-hydroxybutyrate did not affect OP, but injection of .alpha.-ketoglutarate accelerated OIP. Addition of exogenous flavin sharply activated OP. Initiation of OP is caused by photochemical oxidation of lipids and substrates of the .alpha.-ketoglutarate type with participation of singlet oxygen and triplet flavin.
