Treatment of malignant glioma with mumps virus

Six patients with malignant brain tumors were treated with mumps virus. Four patients were treated in combination with radiation and chemotherapy postoperatively, 1 patient in combination with radiation without the operation and 1 patient with mumps virus alone postoperatively. Mumps virus was considered to be effective in 3 of the cases. In the 1st and 2nd cases, the improvement on CT scans may not be ascribed to the effect of mumps virus alone; mumps virus was considered to be effective because the tumors enlarged in spite of irradiation and chemotherapy and they decreased in size after administration of mumps virus. The 3rd case demonstrated the effectiveness of mumps virus, i.e., administration of mumps virus alone induced an almost complete disappearance of the tumor on CT scans and improvement of clinical state. No effect of mumps virus was observed in the other cases. The tumor showed progressive growth in spite of administration of mumps virus. The mechanism of mumps virus action on tumor-bearing patients is not established, but an immunological effect appears likely. Several immunological parameters such as natural killer cell, killer T-cell, suppressor T-cell function, etc., will be examined.
