In the intestines of five horses with grass sickness there were fewer nerve fibres which stained for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, substance P and encephalin. The mucosa was poor in cells containing enteroglucagon and somatostatin. Electron microscopy revealed extensive degeneration of intestinal nerve fibres. P-type fibres had undergone extensive degranulation with the formation of numerous vacuoles.
