Clinical signs, in an 11-year-old mare of motor neuron disease and subacute grass sickness were confirmed histologically. Following this case a reassessment of earlier cases was made of which 22 were well documented and histopathologically confirmed as grass sickness. The authors put forward the hypothesis that acute grass sickness and equine motor neuron disease could be distinct manifestations or syndromes of the same basic, underlying condition. Subacute and chronic cases often appear to represent a mixture of both clinical syndromes, dominated in individual cases by one or the other. The epidemiology of the 2 syndromes is quite different.
