General definitions in the field of replantation surgery are outlined. The terms total and subtotal amputations in contrast to the term of revascularization are clearly separated. General ideas are discussed about the different aspects for the judgement of the late functional results. An assessment of how the patient can use his replanted parts in his profession and daily life should received particular emphasis.
