In this study the needs of 73 adult gynaecological patients concerning psychological preparation for surgery were examined. The patients could select between an information-providing and an anxiety-reducing psychological preparation mode, each including three components such as sensory information or guided imagery. The information were chosen by the majority of the patients (60.3%). When additionally asked to compose an (fictitious) individual psychological preparation out of the six components, the patients preferred different components depending on their age, preoperative anxiety and experiences with surgery. The results indicate that the psychological preoperative treatment should be individualized to match the needs of gynaecological patients.
