The mode of swelling of ) when the osmolality of fixed solution was increased to the same level as the hypertonic D-glucose and when it depended on the incubation temperature; was inhibited by cytochalasin B, HgCl2 and NaF; was not observed in canine red blood cells; was observed with various monosaccharides but not with D-saccharose and D-mannitol; was reduced with L-glucose which is an optical isomer; and was influenced by the extracellular Na concentration. The swelling of the red blood cells was evidently due to the absorbtion of water, which resulted from the shift of D-glucose through the membrane. The existence of specific D-glucose carrier in the human red blood cell membrane was also indicated.
