Treatment of Ota's nevus and melanosis by xuejiebiandou (resina draconis, semen dolichoris album) decoction

According to the principle of stimulating circulation to resolve stasis, "Taohongsiwutang" was used as the basis of therapy, adding "Xuejlebiandoutang" with some modification. Altogether 33 cases of Ota's nevus and melanosis were treated. Improvement was noticed in all 33, with marked improvement in 13 cases. Cu, Zn, Ca, Mg and Fe, and the amino acids participating in pigment biosynthesis were determined. The serum level of Cu, Zn, phenylalanine and tyrosine were much lower in the patients than in the normal controls (P < 0.01-0.001). The importance of further investigation of the theoretical concept of melanosis in Chinese traditional medicine and analyzation of the effective principles of the medicinal herbs used is discussed.
