Twelve pesticides and a sweetening agent (cyclamate) and two of its probable metabolites were tested in the laboratory for mutagenicity in Drosophila melanogaster Mg. The compounds were fed to adult males, and it was shown from the incidence of recessive lethal mutations in the offspring that only 1,2-dibromoethane and 1,2-dibromopropane were definitely mutagenic. MCPA ((4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid) also seemed to be a weak mutagen, and MCPB (4-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)butanoic acid) may have been.
