The molecular structure and properties of the gene enhancer of yellow 1, e(y)1, which participates in the organization of remote interactions between promoters and enhancers in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster, were described. It was shown that it codes transcription factor TAFII40 (an element of the preinitiation transcription complex TFIID). The gene e(y)1/TAFII40 is expressed at all stages of development and in all cells of the fruit fly. The protein was found in practically all disks of the polytene chromosomes. The gene e(y)1 is a "maternal gene" whose product accumulates in the oocytes. The inhibition of expression of the gene e(y)1/TAFII40 is lethal for the organism. Two mutations of the gene were obtained: the mutation e(Y)1u1, which was induced by the insertion of the mobile Stalker element; and the mutation e(y)1P1, induced by the insertion of the P-element. A genetic study of the mutation e(y)1u1 showed that the internal promoters are sensitive to the decrease of the expression of TAFII40.
