A new technique of application of hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) plus laser radiation in cancer diagnosis and treatment has recently been developed. This method is based upon the unique property of HPD to selectively remain in higher concentration in malignant tissue, and to produce fluorescence and singlet oxygen when activated by visible light. The tumor can be imaged by its fluorescence and destroyed by its photodynamic effect. The preliminary outcome of 20 cases treated by this technique has been encouraging and no serious side-effect encountered. However, prolonged observation and final conclusion are needed for definite assessment of such photodynamic effect in cancer management.
