The purpose of this study was to investigate the thermal effects on mice bearing subcutaneous tumor tissues after photoradiation therapy by argon laser and hematoporphyrin derivatives (Hpd). 1 .times. 107 ascite tumor cells were implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of the femoral part of selected C3H strain male mice, seven to eight weeks of age. When the tumor had grown to 10 .+-. 2 mm in diameter, the mice were divided into many groups and treated w/o Hpd and argon laser by various output powers. Twenty-four hours before laser irradiation, a concentration of 7.5 mg/kg (body weight) of Hpd was injected into the abdomen of the mice. A thermoprobe was inserted into the subcutaneous part of the normal tissue surrounding the tumor and in different locations in the tumor to detect the changes of temperature during and after the argon laser irradiation of the tumor. The results revealed that there were thermal effects in the tumor after photoradiation therapy, mainly induced by the laser irradiation, and the higher the output power of laser irradiation, the greater the elevation of temperature in the tumor. Under the same total energy of irradiation, the elevation of higher output power was more than that of the lower output power. The recovery rate of temperature of higher output power after irradiation was the same as in the lower output power. Furthermore, the changes of temperature in the internal part of the tumor were less than those in the superficial parts. There also existed some changes of temperature in the normal tissue surrounding the tumor, but these were not significant.
