The cholesterol-coronary heart disease (C/CHD) relationship has been described more fully because of lipoprotein's role in the cholesterol transport package. This direct and malevolent relationship becomes even sharper when low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is considered. LDL is the primary cholesterol transport. On the other hand, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) seems to offer some protection, but total cholesterol levels (TCL) are still major factors. However, attention is being focused on some population based studies which demonstrate that there may be an inverse relationship between low plasma cholesterol levels and non-cardiovascular mortality generally, and colon cancer particularly. However, the recommendations of the American Heart Association and the NHLBI regarding the prudent diet and steps to reduce saturated fat and cholesterol remain valid. (kbc)
