Evidence for the immunopathological basis of chagasic cardiopathy is reviewed with special emphasis on the role of the circulating antibodies which react with endocardium, blood vessels and interstitium of striated muscle (EVI antibodies) found in such patients. As well as the involvement of humoral immunity, the presence of mononuclear infiltrates in the cardiac lesions suggests the participation of cellular immunity in the pathogenesis of Chagas' disease.
