Soft drink consumption, phosphorus intake, and osteoporosis

The phosphorus content of soft drinks (cola and non-cola) was determined and related to consumption of these beverages. Approximately 17% of the total dietary phosphorus for college students comes from soft drinks. Studies show that as soft drink consumption increases, milk consumption (and thus calcium supplies) decrease. Literature is reviewed on the effects of phosphorus-calcium balance and osteoporosis. Although soft drinks are not contributing excess phosphorus in the diet, if they are substituted for milk, problems could occur. Health effects of high phosphorus intakes need more study. (rkm)
