Regional distribution of beta-neo-endorphin in rat brain and pituitary

A highly specific and sensitive radioimmunoassay for .beta.-neo-endorphin was developed by using an antiserum against .beta.-neo-endorphin. With this assay, the regional distribution of .beta.-neo-endorphin was determined in rat brain and pituitary and compared with that of .alpha.-neo-endorphin, which was assayed in the same samples. .beta.-Neo-endorphin was concentrated in the pituitary, especially in the posterior lobe, like .alpha.-neo-endorphin. .beta.-Neo-endorphin was also widely distributed in brain, but in a different manner than .alpha.-neo-endorphin. Remarkable differences were observed in hippocampus, striatum and cortex, where .alpha.-neo-endorphin predominated over .beta.-neo-endorphin. Both peptides, although structurally related, apparently possess different physiological functions.
