Picorna-like virus causing hepatitis and pancreatitis in turkeys

In 1980 a necrotic, congested liver from a poult that had died on a turkey farm reporting low sporadic mortality without clinical signs yielded, on passage in chick embryos and turkey poults, virus particles resembling picornavirus in size, morphology, and replication in cytoplasm. No antigenic relationship with duck hepatitis virus was found. Pancreatic lesions were found, in addition to the focal hepatitis, in two of three poults killed nine days after inoculation. This is thought to be the first report of turkey virus hepatitis in the UK.
