Gentamicin resistant salmonella

The first isolation from animals in the UK of a gentamicin-resistant strain of Salmonella typhimurium was from a pulmonary lesion in a 4-week-old weaned pig which appeared to have died from transmissible gastroenteritis. Another two isolates from the faeces of piglets on the same farm also carried resistant determinants for gentamicin and apramycin. It seemed unlikely that this salmonella was contributing to diarrhoea after weaning and its recovery appeared to be an incidental finding. The importance of gentamicin-resistant salmonellas in animals is due to the zoonotic nature of salmonellosis and the wide use of gentamicin in man.
