Treatment of acid-base imbalance in acute post-traumatic renal insufficiency

Patients (31) with acute renal failure resulting from acute situations (shock, multiple trauma, sepsis, etc.) which had required admission to the Intensive Therapy Ward of the Polyclinic Gemelli Hospital [Italy], were studied. All patients were submitted to dialysis and were divided into 4 groups according to treatment (peritoneal dialysis or extracorporeal hemodialysis) and survival. Blood gas analysis and acid-base balance data, as well as the degree of normalization of these parameters, are presented and their prognostic value is discussed.
