G6PD[glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase]-deficient red cells develop inclusion bodies during the ascorbate cyanide test while normal red cells do not. It is possible to demonstrate a mixed population of normal and abnormal cells in the majority of females heterozygous for G6PD deficiency.
