2128 Specimens of blood from adult subjects and non-jaundiced and hyperbilirubinaemic neonates of both sexes were screened for G6PD . The deficiency was confirmed by the quantitative spectrophotometric assay of Glock and McLean. Comparison of the results of the 3 screening tests showed that they are equally sensitive and reliable in detecting G6PD deficiency. MRT is recommended as the method of choice because it is sensitive, simple and inexpensive. FST is specific, sensitive and is especially suitable for mass screening.
