The quantitative and qualitative composition of glycosaminoglycans was studied in patient urine. Increased glycosaminoglycan excretion during rheumatic active phase and a direct correlation between glycosaminoglycan level and the activity of the pathological process were established. Disturbances in metabolic processes and their neurohumoral regulation were observed. New biochemical tests sould be used to completely characterize inflammatory activity. The following complex of biochemical test is recommended for examining rheumatic patients: detrmination of serum glycoproteins, which characterizes the intensity of the inflammatory reaction; determination of plasma DNA and serum acid phosphatase, reflecting the degree of tissue destruction; determination of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and transketolase activity in peripheral erythrocytes, which makes it possible to evaluate the nature of the pathological process in the heart; and determination of creatine kinase activity, characterizing the manifestation of rheumatic fever.
