Effectiveness of the repellent action and the prospects for using clothing chemically bonded with carboxide

The possibility of chemically combining carboxyide repellent to cotton threads by treatment with polyacrylic acid using a radiation-chemical method was studied. After entomological and toxicological studies of 3 kinds of material, a cloth containing 20-30% carboxide and retaining repellent properties after 5 washes was selected. The control cloth impregnated with 20% water emulsion of carboxide lost its repellency by 40% after the 1st wash and completely after the 2nd wash. An experimental batch of 1000 shirts made of the cloth containing 20% chemically bound carboxide was tested in various parts of the USSR. The shirts gave 100% protection against gnats after 5 washes, 80% protection against crawling ixodid ticks after 2 washes, and 70% protection after 3 washes. Toxicological studies carried out on 110 individuals showed the safety of wearing these shirts. The shirts should be worn locally in areas with a high population density of blood-sucking arthropods when long-term protection is necessary.
