Forty-nine patients participated in a physical training program at the State Rehabilitation Institute in Oslo [Norway] after undergoing an aortocoronary bypass operation. The results of the program are reviewed. The training program was started 8 wk after the operation and the physical working capacity was already markedly increased, compared to the preoperative results. A further significant increase in physical working capacity occurred during 4 wk of training. Approximately 60% of the patients returned to work. Reduced physical working capacity, persistence of angina pectoris, prolonged preoperative sick-leave and the type of occupation seem to be the most important determinants for failure to resume work after coronary bypass surgery.
