Clinical evaluation of Nomilen preparation containing Ca, Mg and P

Clinical and field trials of the Ca-, Mg- and P-containing preparation, Nomilen are reported. Nomilen is avaible in 100-ml vials, each of which contains 16.0 g calcium-gluconate, 6.60 g calcium-glycerophosphate, 6.40 g MgCl2, 2.50 g caffeine and 2.50 g sodium salicylate. A single i.v. treatment of cows with 100 ml Nomilen evoked a considerable increase in serum Ca, Mg and P levels and a simultaneous decrease in serum alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity for a period of 4 h. Administration of Nomilen was followed by a temporary increase in respiration rate, ruminal contractions and heart rate. Pigs responded to i.v. administration of 30 ml Nomilen by rise of body temperature and increased excitability, in individually varying degrees depending on stress sensitivity. The serum Ca, Mg, P and AP levels of the pigs alternately rose and fell hourly. After baseline values were established in 47 cases, 471 animals (161 cows and 310 pigs) were treated with Nomilen. The greater part of hypocalcemic conditions subsided on a single treatment; only 7 animals required a 2nd dose of Nomilen for improvement. Hypophosphatemic paresis or weakness responded similarly well. The P component of the preparation accounted for acceleration of postpartum uterine involution through its muscle tonicity-enhancing effect. Sows with MMA-syndrome or mild osteomalacia, and pigs with rickets improved rapidly on i.m. treatment with Nomilen (combined with vitamin D3 for rickets therapy). Nine cows, 235 pigs, 3 goats and 13 dogs were treated with Nomilen for osteomalacia and bone weakness. All except advanced or very severe cases of the latter responded well. Nomilen acted as a highly efficient adjuvant in various forms of inflammatory edema.
