Phytoplankton biomass and density monitored for some months in 1978 at Castel Porziano, Italy. The monitored area included recreational sea water of the municipal shore tract and of the terminal tract of a flowering water course. Phytoplankton density was measured by a modified membrane filtration method. Samples were drawn 10 m offshore, considering the high bather density at this line and possible water quality effects on human health. Biomass was evaluated by chlorophyll spectrophotometric analyses, according to a tentative standard method of UNESCO. While marine phytoplankton density values did not exceed 640 cell/ml, the phytoplankton (primarily diatoms) density of the water course was much higher. Some aspects of marine pollution of terrestrial origin are examined with particular reference to the contribution of small water courses to the levels of phytoplankton in recreational coastal waters.
