Value of continuous flow enteral feeding in severe non-surgical digestive forms of rheumatoid purpura in children. Apropos of 5 cases

Five cases of Schoenlein-Henoch syndrome in children, with severe nonsurgical digestive manifestations, are reported. These symptoms principally appeared after meals and lead to an alarming deterioration of the clinical state with severe malnutrition. In these particular disease forms the use of continuous enteral drip feeding (C.E.D.F.) in each case was followed by a rapid regression of digestive symptoms, with general improvement, progressive weight gain and normalization of hypoproteinemia which was not entirely due to renal involvement. The most spectacular result of C.E.D.F. was observed in 4 patients who received a hypoallergenic elementary diet. Such treatment should apparently work by allowing a partial rest of the digestive tract and providing an optimal nutritional intake without exposing the patient to the hazards of continuous parenteral nutrition through deep veinous catheters.
