Spinal cord compression by extradural hematopoietic tissue occurred in a 17 yr old patient with thalassemia intermedia. Treatment with both surgical decompression and physiotherapy resulted in complete functional recovery. A review of the clinical and radiologic data of 8 patients reported in the literature reveal certain common features. The need for prompt recognition and treatment is evident from the results obtained.
