Phonomechanographic systolic variables were determined in 23 normal resting human subjects, and after 30 and 60 s of amnyl nitrite inhalation, from the 1st derivative of the carotid displacement pulse. Although there was not a pattern of the 1st derivative of the carotid pulse, the procedure is useful for evaluating left ventricular performance. The election time in this curve is more accurate than that measured directly from the carotid pulse, while the positive percentage and maximum ascent of positive phase are valuable for evaluation of left ventricular performance.
