Rats maintained under 20 lx continuous light postnatally, for 3-28 days, had no circadian or diurnal pattern of rod outer segment (ROS) disc shedding. The minimum length of dark periods which was able to effect a shedding burst in these rats was estimated. With longer periods of darkness, massive shedding occurred. Rats grown under 20 lx continuous light required dark periods longer than 8-10 h to produce a normal level of ROS disc shedding response when returned to light.
