Male Wistar rats were given a diet deficient in vitamin E from 20 days old for 6, 8.5, 12 or 18 months without or with being given 100 mg vitamin E once a week 4 times before death. In rats given the deficient diet for 12 or 18 months, the photoreceptor outer segment did not regenerate after 400 mg vitamin E was given. The retinal pigment epithelium was filled with lipofuscin granules. In rats given vitamin E after vitamin E deficiency for 6 months the photoreceptor outer segment returned to normal but some retinal epithelial cells still contained lipofuscin granules.
