Of 120 mice experimentally infected with 3rd-stage larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum, 4 showed signs of nervous tissue involvement, such as paralysis of one or both hind legs and urine retention in the bladder, plus massive haemorrhagic areas and blood clots around the large lower nerve trunk, and spinal cord invasion by the worms. The neural disorders occurred between the 2nd and 5th passages of serial infection and after the 7th day of infection. One rat infected with 4th-stage larvae of G. spinigerum died after 5 days with spinal cord invasion.
