Mature sheep fed a roughage diet were given i.v. infusions of either HCl or NaCO3 or were allowed to breathe air enriched with CO2. Infusion of acid resulted in the increased excretion of Ca, Na and Cl in the urine and to increases in the concentrations of K and Cl and a reduction in that of Ca in the plasma. Similar but less marked changes occurred during CO2 breathing. Infusion of alkali increased urinary excretion of Na and Cl but had no effect on the excretion of Ca, P and K. The concentrations of Ca, P, K and Cl in the plasma were reduced while that of Na was increased. The significance of these changes in relation to previous studies in man and dog is discussed.
