Riboflavin nutritional status in Southern Thailand

The incidence of the biochemical riboflavin deficiency, as measured by the activation coefficient of erythrocyte glutathione reductase of more than 1.89 employing the assay method of Beutler was 70, 53 and 69% among the lower middle class subjects, urban school children and rural school children in Southern Thailand, respectively. The incidence was higher in Thais than in Chinese living in the same community. There was a trend towards a higher incidence among the subjects with anemia (possibly Fe deficiency anemia). A tendency towards a higher incidence of biochemical riboflavin deficiency among the lower age groups of school children and a tendency towards a higher incidence among those heterozygous for Hb E were observed, but the data did not show statistical significance. There was no relationship between biochemical riboflavin deficiency and protein undernutrition.
