Relative elastic tissue and smooth muscle volumes were determined in the ventral interventricular branch (VIB) of the left coronary artery by a stereological technique. The outer and inner diameters of the vessels and the ratio of wall thickness to outer diameter were also determined. The elastic tissue forms 5.06-6.13 volume % of the wall, while smooth muscle volume tends to increase along VIB from the aorta to the apex of the heart (from 46.26% to 58%). The ratio of wall thickness to outer diameter rose from an initial 1/9.4 to 1/14 towards the end of the artery and to 1/15.7 in the secondary branch of the left coronary artery.
