Abnormalities in lipid metabolism influence immunological competence. Infectious diseases are accompanied by changes in lipid metabolism and by suppression or stimulation of generalized defensive mechanisms and immune functions. An infectious disease may therefore introduce variables which must be recognized and evaluated during studies aimed at elucidating possible relations between dietary lipids and the development of cancer.
