Survival rate of S. sonnei, S. flexneri and certain serovariants of Salmonella was studied in river water at 25.degree., 29.degree. and 33.degree. C. In river water at 25.degree. C, Shigella maintain their viability for 49-52 days; Salmonella (depending on the serovariant) maintain their viability for 23-72 days. With a temperature rise in the water, Shigella and Salmonella survival decreased.
