A retrospective study of 143 surgical corrections of left displaced abomasum in dairy cows during a 5-month period showed that: mortality rate within 3 months of operation was 8.4% and perforated abomasal ulcers were present at the time of surgery in a third of these cases; cull rate after surgery was 9.1%; the condition was commoner in older cows; 64.5% of cases occurred within 50 days of calving; most cases occurred during the rainy season and this seemed to be associated with feeding difficulties in the muddy corrals; of the 71 cows operated on within 50 days of calving, 42% became pregnant within 100 days of calving; and, 30 days after surgery, most cows had returned to normal milk production.
