Cardiac patients (17) were studied to evaluate effects of GSH on endocrine functions and lysosomal enzymes during cardiopulmonary bypass. They received droperidol, fentanyl and N2O anesthesia and GSH 200 mg/kg was administered i.v. before the start of cardiopulmonary bypass. There were no statistical differences in various hormones in the plasma between the control group and GSH group. Lysosomal enzymes in the plasma were much lower in the GSH group than in the control group. Urine output during the cardiopulmonary bypass in the GSH group also increased significantly as compared with that of the control group. The cause of the increase was not the decreased plasma vasopressin and catecholamine levels but probably an increased renal blood flow as suggested by animal experiments.
