The effect of ACNU = 220 rad. The effect of the interval between ACNU administration and X-radiation on the survival fraction was investigated. Cells were given ACNU (10 .mu.g/ml) and at varying times thereafter (0, 3, 6, 12, 24 h) were irradiated with X-rays (600 rad). When X-rays were given more than 3 h after ACNU administration, the surviving fraction was smaller than when ACNU and X-rays were given in quick succession. The tumors were implant s.c. and irradiated with X-rays (1000 rad) at 3 to 12 h intervals after ACNU administration (10 mg/kg). The combination of ACNU and radiation showed no synergistic increase in the life-span of rats, thus did not reflect the increased doubling time. Do was 4 .mu.g/ml for ACNU (120 min exposure) or 180 rad for X-rays respectively. Combinations of ACNU and radiation showed synergistic cell-killing effects on tumor growth.
