Erythrocytes of the Indian langur were susceptible to in vitro invasion of P. knowlesi. Invasion rate was comparable to that observed in erythrocytes of rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) by this parasite. Specific inhibitors of proteases (chymostatin and leupeptin at 50 .mu.g/ml) inhibited nearly 90% invasion of P. knowlesi merozoites, while pepstatin and elastatinal could inhibit the invasion by 50 and 30%, respectively. Normal erythrocytes pretreated with these inhibitors showed normal invasion. Proteases of merozoites of P. knowlesi may be involved in the invasion process.
