Phagocytic stimulation of rat pulmonary macrophages with levamisole

Sprague-Dawley male rats (14) were injected with levamisole (2.5 mg/kg body wt, s.c.) during 5 days. Ten control rats were injected only with saline. At the 6th day, rats were bled, sacrificed and phagocytic tests were done with its pulmonary macrophages and latex particles suspended either in control or levamisole-containing autologous sera. Phagocytic index of control pulmonary macrophages was 2.96 .+-. 0.31 and that of levamisole-injected rats was 5.63 .+-. 1.70. When control macrophages were tested in the presence of control rat serum to which a similar dose of levamisole was added in vitro, an increase in phagocytic index was observed compared with controls: 5.57 .+-. 1.40. Phagocytic activity of rat pulmonary macrophages can be increased in the presence of levamisole.
