Does oral contraception cause deep venous thromboses?

From 1975-1980, 48 women suffering from deep venous thrombosis were seen at the Surgical Dept. of the Medizinische Akademie Magdeburg. In 22 cases, no objective cause could be found; 16 women, however, were found to be taking oral contraceptives (OCs) for many months and even years. Although there has been no causal link between OCs and deep venous thrombosis, OCs must be considereed as a risk factor in the formation of deep venous thrombosis in women. (author's)
