Pharmacologically influenced hypocalcemia in tourniquet shock in rats

The relationship between lethality and changes in total Ca levels in serum was studied in pharmacologically pretreated rats in tourniquet shock. The level of total serum Ca decreases in tourniquet shock. Pretreatment with histamine, serotonin and ketotifen had a favorable effect both on lethality and on the total serum Ca level in tourniquet shock. Promethazine pretreatment decreased lethality most markedly, yet failed to affect the serum Ca level. After indomethacin pretreatment lethality from tourniquet shock was slightly increased and the serum Ca level rose above the initial value. Prednisolone pretreatment reduced lethality insignificantly; the serum Ca levels were reduced.
