Effects of etorphine and electro-acupuncture on electroconvulsive shock in rats

Seizures were induced by electroconvulsive shock (ECS) in 75 rats. Etorphine (ip) decreased seizure duration, its ED50 being 11 .mu.g/kg. Etorphine (icv) facilitated seizures with ED50 0.35 .mu.g. These effects of etorphine were in a dose-dependent manner. Electroacupuncture (EA) inhibited partially the seizures; this inhibitory effect was reversed by ip naloxone. These results suggest that EA exerts the anticonvulsive action via endogenous opioid system.
