Value of stress-inversion radiography in chronic lateral instability of the ankle joint

A comparative investigation of the functional, clinical and radiological measures of instability of the ankle joint is presented. The material consists of the preoperative information and a follow-up study of 15 patients submitted to operation for chronic lateral instability of the ankle. Of the normal ankles, 27% are radiologically unstable. The method is most appropriate for the diagnosis of combined ruptures of the calcaneofibular ligament and the anterior talo-fibular ligament, but stress inversion radiographs do not provide more information than the subjective and clinical findings.
